Nielson Development wants every visitor to be able to read about our work, download plan sets and reach us, whatever their ability or the technology they use. This site is designed and tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.
What we do
- Every photograph has a text description, and decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers.
- Every page, menu and form works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline. A skip-to-content link is the first thing the keyboard reaches on each page.
- Form fields are labelled, required fields are marked, and any problem with a form is explained next to it in plain words.
- Text can be enlarged to 200% without losing content, and the layout adapts from phones to large screens.
- Colour is never the only way information is shown, and text contrast meets the AA level.
- Animation respects your system's reduced-motion setting.
- Films play in a standard player with keyboard controls, and plan sets are provided as PDF documents.
- The Accessibility options button in the footer of every page offers larger text, higher contrast, reduced motion and underlined links. Your choices are saved in your browser only.
Ongoing work
We check new pages before they go live and re-test the whole site with automated accessibility tools at phone, tablet and desktop sizes. Some project photographs come from partners and are described as accurately as we can; if a description is unclear, tell us and we will fix it. Our films have a music soundtrack and no narration or dialogue, so captions are not needed.
